Thanks to Panarama Tools. Could have been a lot better. As usual I forgot to lock the whitebalance and then panned into the sun. But the stitching worked a treat.

Enblend _really_nicely_ blends across the boundary where the images overlap. Hugin is a tool, like PT, that helps line up the images. It's still in beta but showing a lot of promise...
How late was the sun out until? As you know here in Melbourne it is dark by 4:45pm at this time of year ... California looks temptingly warm & sunny!
