The Americans haven't even adopted the metric system yet and they have already corrupted it. I saw on the side of a truck the engine size quoted as "6.5 Liter". And yes they always spell it that way. Dear god why??

Once you get past the fact they are perverting our language, the usage makes sense.
It's a simpler more consistent approach to always use the 'er' spelling rather than 're' for the same sound, in some places only.
Makes literacy a bit easier - and lets face it, they need all the help they can get.
Except in English it usually works to a rule - eg. meter is a verb and metre is a noun. The job of a metre is to meter.
There is no way to tell them apart in USAsian.
